HKBP berakar dari pelayanan misi Dr. Ingwer Ludwig Nommensen sejak 1861 di Silindung Tarutung, dan kini bertumbuh menjadi sinode gereja terbesar di Indonesia dan Asia Tenggara dengan lebih dari 5 juta jemaat yang setia memuliakan Tuhan.
